  Durham

The “City of Medicine,” together with Raleigh and Chapel Hill, make up the three points of the “Triangle.” But each city is definitely also its own entity, with Durham offering much in the quality-of-living department. From the scholarly halls of Duke University to the internationally renowned performances of the American Dance Festival, Durham offers an abundance of just about everything. Education and culture play a large part in the personality of the city; you’ll find over 40 museums and galleries here, a variety of music and festivals, great schools, an eclectic mix of people from around the country, and much more.

Though Durham serves as home to more than 300 health-related companies, Durham County is known as “A County With MERIT,” (M – Medicine, E – Education, R – Research, I – Industry, and T – Technology). And all of these industries generously abide here. But its beginnings were much more humble – Durham originally sprang from more of a blue-collar town with an emphasis on textiles and tobacco. Today, however, its universities, medical institutions and high-tech businesses form its foundation. Durham also has a strong sense of history, from both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. It played an important part in the beginnings of African-American education and enterprise, as well as in the Civil Rights movement during the pivotal 1950’s and 60’s. Population in this city is currently about 200,000, and there is literally a way of life for every taste – home choices range from urban to suburban, and from lofts in the midst of bustling downtown to the rolling farms of Durham’s more rural areas.
